(Academic) Education

I enjoy motivating young people to develop themselves into young professionals to take on the world! Apart from sharing my knowledge, I often bring my field experience to the forefront when explaining complex issues related to international law and human rights. With my lectures, I try to make the new generation of students as excited and passionate as I am about human rights law. One of my students recently wrote the following reference for me:

“I had the pleasure of having Annemarie as a lecturer for the subject Public International Law for my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Amsterdam. Up until then I always enjoyed studying law but never really knew which field of law I would have liked to pursue. That all changed after attending the classes Annemarie gave. With her help I developed a strong interest and passion for Public International Law. With vivid examples from her impressive experience in the field she always knew how to fascinate me and bring the subject to live. Annemarie is skilled in teaching you to be accurate and pay attention to details while not losing eye for the bigger picture. She really motivates you to work hard and gives good advice as for how to plan your academic career. I enjoyed the experience of having Annemarie as a lecturer immensely.”

I started lecturing at the Law School of Tilburg University during my PhD research, and I continue to do so after I left the university to start my own business. Over the past years, I have developed and taught several courses at different universities (University of Amsterdam, PPLE College, University of Groningen) and colleges (AVANS college), both in the Netherlands as well as abroad (Indonesia). These courses – both at the bachelor and master level – relate to the field of international public law, human rights, harmful practices, violence against women, gender-related issues, asylum and migration, FGM/C as well as more broadly research methods and critical thinking. In addition, I supervise bachelor and master theses and have further coordination and tutoring tasks. I am the type of lecturer that continually challenges students to walk the extra mile in improving their assignments and projects. In my courses, I always build perspective and connections between different academic disciplines. I also have an open mind towards new teaching and learning methods (for example Problem Based Learning) and I enjoy trying new things.
